Fantastic Voyage: Final Animation + Art Of

Stamp of Nature from Daniel Reason on Vimeo.

This is the final submission post for the Fantastic Voyage project. I have had many problems along the way so it too longer than I thought. It looks very rushed and fast in places, so that is something I need to work on/improve. When choosing the music, I wanted to get the 1950s' but I also took into the consideration that the animation is a bit fast. The music is up-beat and I think it works quite well with the animation. Because of this, when I was making it and thought certain sections looked a bit rushed, the music made it quite funny and it didn't seem so bad.

Fantastic Voyage: Writing in the book

Here is another section from the animation. This section is very important as it is the part that explains each stage of the life cycle. It works quite well. Maybe a bit too fast and weird the hand/pencil only moves in a straight line, but I like how it looks. In the final animation it will be cut between the life cycle itself, so these little issues won't be too bad.

Fantastic Voyage: Scene 2 + WI?M UPDATE

Having just realised that I haven't posted anything for a while, I thought I'd post this to show how it's going. Although this is just the one shot, I have done other shots from the animation but haven't completed them all and put them together. I have had to do other things so I have had to delay completing the animation once again.

I have also been completing the What If? Metropolis re-sit and have been working on thumbnails. I have done some silhouettes using the shapes from Hofmann's work, which don't work too well. I have re-created more compositions in his style, and have taken some of his work into Maya and have extruded the shapes, which have given some interesting results. I will post these in the coming days.

What If? Metropolis #2: Influence Map - Hans Hoffman + Initial thoughts + Fantastic Voyage UPDATE

This is an influence map showing some of Hans Hofmann's work. As you can see it is very abstract and so creates some interesting shapes. With regards to designing the city, my initial thoughts are that it should be very colourful and quite obscure. In some of these pictures, I can see layouts of a city, replacing blocks with buildings of the same colour and using  colours for the sky/sea/background etc. In comparison to both Bridget Riley's work and the city I designed,  I imagine this one to be more vivid and more "crazy" - if that's the right word. I think my biggest challenge will be managing to convert the rather basic shapes and colours of his work into a city.

Fantastic Voyage UPDATE:
I have been working in flash for a couple of weeks or so now, and have been doing so while having a wealth of internet problems. I intended to have it finished by the end of this week, but it will probably be next week.

Fantastic Voyage: Batch Render #2 - Scene #3

As the internet problems that I have had over the past or so have gone, these images show frames from the latest batch render of scene 3. I think it looks better than the first render, as the floor has been redone. It, perhaps, looks a bit flat and that it ends suddenly, but I think it terms of making the animation, I can now leave Maya and start using Flash.

Fantastic Voyage: Re-making the ground - Scene #3 - Part 2

I have added the lines to the UV, and I think they do not looked stretched. They are a little bold and fuzzy so I'll try to fix that.

Fantastic Voyage: Re-making the ground - Scene #3

Following on from the batch render that I did for the final shot in the third scene, the floor looked a little stretched. I have re-made the floor completely and have started to make the UV. I still need to add the line details, but so far it is looking a bit better than the original.

Fantastic Voyage: Batch Render - Scene #3

Below are some of the frames from the last shot of scene 3. I am pleased with how this scene looks, although it looks a little empty in places.

Fantastic Voyage: Batch Render - Scene #2

Below are some of the frames from the second scene. I am very happy with how this scene looks. Perhaps the only thing that could be improved is that the sky looks a little dark/gloomy.

Fantastic Voyage: Submission Disc Artwork

Apologies for the late upload, but this is the final submission disc artwork. I am quite pleased with this layout as it is quite consistent with the style and is quite "clean".

Fantastic Voyage: Batch Render - Scene #1

This is the a batch render of the first scene. It, obviously, doesn't have the boy in it yet as that will be added in 2D. I am pleased with this render, although I didn't realise there would be a shadow on the sky in the background.

Fantastic Voyage: Title Screen

This is the final title screen. The animations are a little fast, but I think that suits the target audience, so I am pretty pleased with it.This clip is only a second long, but it will be 2 seconds long in the final animation.

Fantastic Voyage: Final Pre-Viz - (No Music)

This is the final pre-viz, but I am yet to find/choose the right music, but it does still have the sound effects. There are a few minor things that are different to the animatic, but overall I am quite pleased with it.

I will now try to find the appropriate soundtrack that will work with the animation. I will, obviously, then need to add it to both the Pre-Viz and Animatic.

Fantastic Voyage: Book of Badges - Colour Experiments

While creating the Pre-Viz for the third scene, I realised that I needed to create the book. As the book will be in 2D in the final animation, there is no point in modelling it out, so I decided to use the same method as the bike, where I'd show it on a cube, through a UV. I made some colour experiments, but they are only to see what colour the book should be. I think the red one would be best, because it would show a link between the book and the bike.

Fantastic Voyage: Pre-Viz - Scene #2

This is the pre-viz for the second scene. It was pretty much the same as the first scene, so it was straight forward to make, as it is just one camera shot. The third scene will be a lot more complicated, as there are will be more camera shots involved.

Fantastic Voyage: Pre-Viz - Scene #1

This is the first scene of the pre-viz. I used the characters that were in the Pre-Viz section of the tutorials, and edited the shaders to make the boy wear the boy scout clothing. Like the bike, it looks quite weird, but it does demonstrate the scene well.

Fantastic Voyage: UVs & Texturing - #5

I have added the new UV for the fllor in the third setting. It is roughly the same as the previous one, but as it was remade completely, I needed to make a UV. The path in each setting is meant to look "worn out" and a bit messy, this is because it will show that the path is used frequently and so, therefore, is the forest.

Fantastic Voyage: Recreating Scene #3

After modelling the first and second setting to much higher standards than the third setting, I removed and tweaks somethings to make the third scene look more impressive. The third setting is the most important as most of the animation will take place there, including the life cycle. I still need to add a UV to the floor, as that is one of the things I removed, and I still need to add the slime mold to the tree - In addition, to add the pen lines to the textures.. Below are some renders of how the third scene looks so far:

Fantastic Voyage: Preparation for Pre-Viz - Scene #2

As I said in the previous post, I added the same "bike" to this scene as it will be used in the pre-viz. It, obviously, looks a little strange, but I like how the Pre-Viz will be quite comical and fun on it's own.
